Long Beach Opera to Celebrate Composers of African Descent with ‘Dream Variation’

The Long Beach Opera is set to present “Dream Variation” on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020 at the California African American Museum.

The performance will celebrate works of composers of African descent throughout history, including Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Margaret Bonds, Anthony Davis, William Grant Still, and Moses Hogan, among others.

The performance, which will be led by Dr. Derrell Acon, Director of Engagement and Equity, will feature such artists as soprano Tiffany Townsend, mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, tenor Nathan Granner, bass-baritone Derrell Acon, pianist Leonard Hayes, KRÖMA Quartet, neo-funk band Zaya and Company, and rap artist MC Supernatural.

This is part of a series of “UnGalas” presented by Long Beach opera. The company is set to continue its 2019-20 season with the LA Premiere of “The Lighthouse,” followed by the U.S. premiere of “Billy the Kid.” Then the company will showcase “Frida” in June.
