Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet to Produce ‘Confessions in a Taxophone Booth’

By David Salazar

The Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet are embarking on a new project entitled “Confessions in a Taxophone Booth.”

The project is led by director Kamilė Gudmonaitė, composer Dominykas Digimas, and set designer Barbora Šulniūtė. The idea is for a taxophone booth to be available near the opera house where people can make a call and say what they need to say but have been unable to utter due to fear, time, or possibility. These calls will be recorded and used as the basis of the libretto and subsequently, an opera.

The project will be available to anyone around the world, even those not in Vilnius. They would simply need to visit the website www.taksofonas.com and make their “confession.”

“The idea of the work was inspired by a moving story that took place in Otsuchi, Japan: a resident lost his beloved cousin and, mourning in his lands, set up a telephone booth on the hill where he could talk to him, and the spoken words were ‘carried away by the wind.’ Gradually, more and more people learned about the phone booth, and in 2011 after the tsunami, which resulted in more than 2,000 missing people, it has become a place for calls to lost relatives,” director K. Gudmonaitė said in an official press release.
