Leonardo Capalbo will sing the title role in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann“ at the New National Theatre Tokyo replacing Stefan Pop.

The company announced that Stefan Pop withdrew from the production and will be replaced by Capalbo.

The American tenor was last seen in Japan in the same role on tour with L’Opéra de Lyon. Capalbo has also performed the role of Hoffmann at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the final performances of the famed production by John Schlesinger and at the Bremen Musikfest with Les Musiciens du Louvre led by Marc Minkowski.

Capalbo joins a cast that includes Kobayashi Yuka, Yasui Yoko, Kinoshita Mihoko, Yokoyama Keiko, and Kyle Ketelsen. Marko Letonja conducts the performance.

“Les Contes d’Hoffmann” opens at the New National Theatre Tokyo on April 19, 2020, and runs through April 25, 2020.
