Laurence Olivier Awards Announces 2019 Winners

The winners of the Olivier Awards 2019 were announced on Apr. 7, 2019 at the Royal Albert Hall in a ceremony hosted by Jason Manford.

The award for Best New Opera Production went to Janáček’s “Katya Kabanova” at the Royal Opera House. Richard Jones’ production, which sets the story in the 1960s, ran from Feb. 4 – 26, 2019 with a cast including Amanda Majeski (in the title role), Susan Bickley, Pavel Cernoch, Andrew Staples, Clive Bayley, Andrew Tortise, Emily Edwards, and Sarah Pring. Also nominated were “Lessons in Love and Violence” at the Royal Opera House and “The Turn of the Screw” at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

The winner of Outstanding Achievement in Opera was revealed to be the ensemble of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” at the London Coliseum. The production starred Eric Greene as Porgy and Nicole Cabell as Bess, with Nmon Ford, Latonia Moore, Nadine Benjamin and Frederick Ballentine rounding out the cast. Fellow nominees included David Butt Philip and Roderick Williams for their performance in Britten’s “War Requiem” at the London Coliseum, the English National Opera Chorus for Paul Bunyan at Wilton’s Music Hall, and Andris Nelsons for his conducting of “Lohengrin” at the Royal Opera House. The new production of “Porgy and Bess” will return to the Metropolitan during the 2019-20 season, featuring Angel Blue and Eric Owens in the title roles.
