Laura Virella & The Cast of ‘Revoltosa’ Honored at The Helen Hayes Awards

Puerto Rican mezzo-soprano Laura Virella and the cast of the Spanish operetta “Revoltosa” took home several honors at the Helen Hayes Awards.

The cast of “Revoltsoa” which was led by Virella won Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical.

Virella was nominated for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical Outstanding. She said in a press release, “It was my greatest honor to be nominated for outstanding lead performer in a musical from within this award-winning team. A nomination alone was surreal. I would be remiss not to point out the outstanding achievement that it is in and of itself for a ZARZUELA to be nominated –at all– at the Helen Hayes Awards, not to mention WIN. To have a genre in Spanish and a genre so rooted in the cultural costumbrismo of another country be acknowledged and represented in these American awards is a huge accomplishment for GALA and for the Spanish-speaking community in the US. I’m thrilled to have been part of such a momentous occasion.”

This year’s Helen Hayes Awards recognized works from 131 eligible productions presented in the 2022 calendar year. Awards were given in 41 categories.
