By David SalazarThe Cleveland Orchestra has announced its third annual Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival.
First up is “United in Song! A Community Celebration.”
Performance Dates: May 17, 2025
At the core of the experience will be three concert performances of “Jenůfa.” Franz Welser-Möst conducts the opera which will headline a slate centered on the theme of “Reconciliation.” Latonia Moore, Pavol Breslik, Miles Mykkanen, and Nina Stemma star.
“Janáček’s ‘Jenůfa’ is a rare gem of the operatic repertoire — emotionally raw, morally complex, and musically gripping,” said Welser-Möst, per an official press release. “Its profound exploration of sacrifice, forgiveness, and redemption makes it a uniquely compelling artistic journey that I look forward to sharing with our musicians, cast, chorus, and audiences in Cleveland this spring.”
Performance Dates: May 17 – 25, 2025
In tandem with the production of “Jenůfa,” the festival will present the community event “Opera Curious? The World of Jenůfa.”
Performance Dates: May 18- 25, 2025
Finally, Welser-Möst and soprano Sarah Aristdou present “Vox Humana,” a program of music by Bach, Poulenc, Ustvolskaya, and Strauss.
Performance Dates: May 23-24, 2025
“Now in its third edition, the Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival continues to demonstrate how the arts can inspire meaningful dialogue and introspection in ways few other mediums can,” added Jehuda Reinharz, President & CEO of the Mandel Foundation. “This year’s theme of reconciliation invites us to confront our differences and reflect on our histories. By bringing music, storytelling, and conversation together, we hope that the festival will cultivate and deepen the spirit of empathy, renewal, and understanding in our community.”
The full slate will be announced in February 2025 though the company did reveal other events, including “The Moth Mainstage: Live from Severance” and “The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance” with pianist Michelle Cann.
The festival runs from May 16-25, 2025.
