LA Opera Revamps 2020-21 Season, to Present Opera by Chevalier de Saint-Georges

By Francisco Salazar

LA Opera has announced that it will be postponing four productions that were scheduled for later this year.

The first half of LA Opera’s 2020-21 season, which was set to present productions of “Il Trovatore,” “Tannhäuser,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Get Out in Concert” will be rescheduled for the first half of the 2021-22 season. Most of the original performers will return for the new dates.

As a result, new programming for the fall of 2020 will be presented digitally. Among the new programs will be a virtual gala to celebrate LA Opera’s 35th Anniversary, a live stream of “L’Amant Anonyme” by French composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and a series of seven operatic digital shorts, including newly commissioned works.

LA Opera will resume its programming in 2021 with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and also plans to present its canceled productions of “Pelléas et Mélisande” and “The Marriage of Figaro,” originally scheduled for May and June 2020, respectively, in a future season.

Here is the new scheduled for the postponed productions:

Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” will be performed from Sept. 18 through Oct. 10, 2021, conducted by Music Director James Conlon. Guanqun Yu will replace Angel Blue as Leonora and Raehann Bryce-Davis will sing all performances as Azucena, a role she originally shared with Ekaterina Semenchuk. The remainder of the cast remains unchanged: Gregory Kunde will appear as Manrico, Vladimir Stoyanov will sing as Count di Luna, and Morris Robinson will interpret Ferrando.

Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” has been rescheduled for Oct. 16 through Nov. 6, 2021, conducted by James Conlon. Original cast members Issachah Savage (Tannhäuser), Sara Jakubiak (Elisabeth), Yulia Matochkina (Venus), and Lucas Meachem (Wolfram) will all return, joined by Morris Robinson, who replaces John Relyea as Hermann.

Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” will be performed from Nov. 20 through Dec. 12, 2021, conducted by Roberto Abbado. The cast will remain unchanged led by Serena Malfi (Angelina/Cinderella), Levy Sekgapane (Ramiro), Alessandro Corbelli (Magnifico), Rodion Pogossov (Dandini), and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo (Alidoro). However, the previously scheduled Stefan Herheim production of that opera is unavailable for the new performance dates.

The presentation of  “Get Out in Concert ” at the Theatre at Ace Hotel on Oct. 29 and 31, 2020, has been rescheduled for Oct. 30 and 31, 2021.
