La Jolla Music Society Announce 2023-24 Winter Season Featuring Lawrence Brownlee, Renée Fleming, and Rhiannon Giddens

La Jolla Music Society has announced its 2023-24 Winter Season, celebrating its 55th anniversary with 71 events scheduled.

Vocal highlights include a recital on Valentine’s Day, showcasing the exceptional talents of Rhiannon Giddens, soprano Renée Fleming, and star tenor Lawrence Brownlee. For this article, only classical vocal performances are listed.

“To push San Diego’s conceptions of who we are as a company and a venue drives me as I plan each and every season. As we celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the organization and the fifth anniversary at The Conrad, I want La Jolla and the entire San Diego Community to know who we are and what a beautiful jewel our home is. And not a hidden jewel, but a wonderful and welcoming place to see and hear the world’s finest entertainment in our own backyards,” stated Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal in an official press release.

La Jolla Symphony and Chorus kick things off with a concert, “This Soil;” featuring Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” with vocalist Amanda Olea. Also on the program is music by Kristen Kuster, Florence Price, Gabriela Lena Frank, Leonard Bernstein, and Gala Flagello.

Silkroad Ensemble, led by Rhiannon Giddens, will present their latest project, “American Railroad,” which highlights the impact of diverse communities on the Transcontinental Railroad and America’s Westward Expansion.

LJMS’ SummerFest Music Director, Inon Barnatan, joins forces with the renowned soprano, Renée Fleming, to present a recital program that promises to be the perfect Valentine’s Day celebration.

Performance Date: Feb. 14, 2024

Lawrence Brownlee, star of the Metropolitan Opera, is recognized worldwide for his captivating performances and vocal talent in the Bel Canto repertoire. Brownlee also stands as an influential voice, advocating for activism and diversity within the opera industry. Program TBA.

Jakub Józef Orlinski With Il Pomo D’oro showcases countertenor showcasing rarely performed early music repertoire with the acclaimed chamber orchestra Il Pomo d’Oro.
