Korea National Opera to Present 66-Performance Nationwide Tour

By David Salazar

The Korea National Opera has announced a nationwide touring initiative spanning 66 performances over 40 days.

The tour marks an increase of nine performances over last year and places a greater emphasis on full-length opera, with five works on offer: Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi,” Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus,” Verdi’s “La Traviata,” and Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.” Twenty-nine performances will take place across major cities including Chuncheon, Jeju, Andong, and Sacheon.

Beyond traditional theater venues, the company will bring performances to juvenile detention centers and military bases as part of its cultural sharing program. Gala concerts are also planned at locations including the Osan Arts Center and Army Headquarters in Gyeryong.

Children and youth programming accounts for 37 of the tour’s performances. The “Opera Journey in the Classroom” initiative will visit special schools and elementary schools in underserved areas 31 times nationwide, while the Kinder Opera production of The “Barber of Seville,” reformatted in 2025 to bring students into professional venues rather than school gymnasiums, will visit Cheongju and Sejong this year.

In a statement, Director and Artistic Director Park Hye-jin said the company is “striving to enable more people to experience opera in their daily lives through performances that transcend regions and generations.”
