Komische Oper Berlin Cancel Planned Production Due to Budget Cuts
By Francisco SalazarThe Komische Oper Berlin has canceled its production of “Mein Friend Bunbury.”
Via social media, the company said, “We would like to start the year with some good news, but due to the austerity constraints in the ongoing Berlin household, it is with a heavy heart that we have to cancel the planned production of ‘Mein Friend Bunbury,’ which would have celebrated its premiere in a tent in the middle of Berlin in June. We are very sorry for this, especially for those involved in the production and, of course, also for all of you, who have already bought tickets for the play and were looking forward to it. Regarding the reimbursement, all those affected will be contacted directly.”
Over the last month, Berlin has proposed a €130 million in cuts. That would mean that 450 institutes that are reliant at least in part on state subsidies would be affected. Last month the Komische Oper Berlin alongside the two other Berlin theaters released a joint statement pleading with the government stating, “The cuts that have now been decided upon threaten jobs, cultural diversity and the very essence of this city. Culture is not only a locational advantage, it is indispensable for cohesion and the future. It is the heart of our city.”
