Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony to Return after Bankruptcy
By Francisco SalazarThe Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony has announced a comeback after canceling over a year ago and then filing for bankruptcy.
In a statement, the orchestra noted that during a court hearing a proposal to creditors was approved by the Superior Court of Ontario and resulted in the annulment of the bankruptcy.
In a statement, Bill Poole, chair of the symphony’s board of directors said, “I’m absolutely delighted as is everybody associated with the board — the musicians, the volunteers, everybody. This is just such a great place to be now after a year in the wilderness.”
Additionally, the board of the orchestra announced that it would meet on Nov. 12 to outline how the KWS will move forward. For now the orchestra has two concerts scheduled at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kitchener.
Back in September 2023, the orchestra filed for bankruptcy and canceled its 2023-24 season. At the time, Rachel Smith-Spencer, Chair of the Board of Directors said “We are absolutely devastated about this outcome. In the last three days, we have appealed to all of our major stakeholders and have exhausted all available avenues to secure the $2M required immediately to continue operations.”
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony was founded in 1945 and has toured across Canada, Europe, South America, and Asia.
