Killer Queen Opera to Present ‘Good Church Boys Do Not Become Artists’

By David Salazar

Killer Queen Opera is set to present the second installment of The Patricia Ellen Singing Artist Residency, featuring sopranista Jay St. Flono in the monodrama “Good Church Boys Do Not Become Artists,” on May 21, 2026 at Gallery Particulier in Brooklyn, New York.

Told in three acts, the work blends memoir, performance, and recital to explore identity and self-realization, examining what it means for a queer Black American classical singer to inhabit the roles of interpreter, creator, librettist, and composer simultaneously. The program draws on music by Roland Hayes, James Dargan, Mary Prescott, Patricia Ellen Turner, and St. Flono himself.

St. Flono, a classical singer, actor, librettist, and author from Brooklyn, is joined by pianist Giulia Magarelli, alongside performers Mishonna McCottry and Tatianna Overton.

The Patricia Ellen Singing Artist Residency, named for St. Flono’s late mother, supports classically trained and multi-genre singers pursuing multidisciplinary work outside the mainstream opera industry.
