Kennedy Center Opera House Could Be Renamed ‘First Lady Melania Trump Opera House’

When opera goers head to the Kennedy Center Opera House this September, they may be walking into the newly named “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House” if Congress gets its way.

According to CNN, House republicans included language that would rename the opera house in honor of the first lady in an amendment for a spending bill for the Interior Department.

For the change to happen, the bill has to pass the full House and Senate. However, the House is set to recess on Wednesday and will leave lawmakers with limited time when they return in September before the government runs out of funding.

Before the deadline, lawmakers need to pass a series of full-year appropriations bills or a short-term funding extension.

GOP Rep. Mike Simpson introduced the amendment noting, “Yes, we renamed the opera house at the Kennedy Center for the first lady, who is the honorary chairman of the board of trustees of the Kennedy Center” and added that it is an “excellent way to recognize” the first lady’s “support and commitment to promoting the arts.”

The first lady is not known for her contribution to the arts. She was made an honorary chair of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during President Trump’s first term, but due to political tension with the arts communities, she was not initially active in the role. She made her first appearances at the Kennedy Center in 2019. This year, she made another appearance at the Kennedy Center and was greeted with a sea of boos at the premiere of “Les Misérables.” The first lady is currently filming a documentary directed by Brett Ratner for which she got paid $40 million.
