
Kathleen O’Mara Wins Queen Sonja Singing Competition
By Francisco SalazarThe Queen Sonja Singing Competition has announced its 2025 winners.
The first prize winner of 50,000 Euros was Kathleen O’Mara from the USA. Second prize of 10,000 Euros went to American mezzo-soprano Meridian Prall, while the third prize of 5,000 euros went to Polish bass Pawel Horodyski.
The finalist Prizes of 1,500 euros went to Ukrainian baritone Vladyslav Buialskyi, Norwegian soprano Hannah Edmunds, and Polish soprano Justyna Khil. The Ingrid Bjoner scholarship of NOK 100.000 was awarded to Norwegian soprano Hannah Edmunds.
In a statement, Executive Director Lars Hallvard Flaeten said, “We are proud to have presented an international top-level team of singers in the final concert. This year’s competition has already played an important role in strengthening their future careers, with engagements at leading international opera houses and orchestras.”
The finalists were accompanied by the Oslo Philharmonic, conducted by Nicholas Carter.
This year’s jury included Randi Stene (Jury Leader, Artistic Director of Opera, The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet Oslo), Tatjana Kandel (Head of Artistic Planning, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen), Michael Heaston (Deputy General Manager, the Metropolitan Opera, New York), Christina Scheppelmann (CEO and Artistic Director, La Monnaie/De Munt, Brussels), Alex Taylor (Head of Artistic Planning, the Oslo Philharmonic, Oslo), Carolin Wielpütz (Director of Artistic Planning, MusikTheater an der Wien), and Jean Denes (Director of Opera, Theater Basel).
