Kasper Holten to Step Down from Royal Danish Theatre

By Francisco Salazar

Kasper Holten has announced he is stepping down as Artistic Director of The Royal Danish Theatre.

Holten has held the position since 2018 and will conclude his tenure in August 2027.

The Royal Danish Theatre announced the news in a press release with Holten stating, “I have decided not to seek the position of theater director again when my contract expires on August 31, 2027. I have informed the theater’s board about this the day before. Why? Because I have been in the direction of the Royal Theatre for more than half of my adult life. 20 years. That’s a long time. So maybe it’s time to try something else, see what else I have to do in this life. And then it’s a very big privilege to be allowed to be at the head of the theater, but I also think it comes with a commitment to give up again – and pass the baton to someone else who can see the role and development of the national stage with fresh eyes. I am very proud of the results we have achieved at the theater and of the organization I will be leaving behind for a future theater director. But it’s not over yet… for now, I’m looking forward to all that is to come in the coming year, with all the good performances of the season and the opening of our children’s universe Hurlumhuset at the end of the year.”

Holten has also served as director of Opera from 2011 until 2017 at the Royal Opera House in London and  is Vice President of the Board of the European Academy of Music Theatre.

The Royal Danish Theatre’s board is now initiating a broad recruitment process to ensure a new artistic director is in place to assume the role in August 2027.
