Karen Slack Confirms Upcoming Performance at the Kennedy Center

By Francisco Salazar

Following several cancelations and protests, Karen Slack has announced she will still sing at the Kennedy Center.

The soprano took to social media and said, “The way Ms. Rutter speaks about art and artists is inspiring. I will not be canceling African Queens next month. How can I sing about powerful women who fought against oppression on a recital named after Ruth Bader Ginsberg at an institution as esteemed as the Kennedy Center and just walk away? We’ll see how it plays out BUT it won’t be because I decided to fold!”

The soprano’s concert “African Queens” which is being presented by Washington Performing Arts is scheduled for March 9 and will feature pianist Kevin Miller. The new project celebrates the history and legacy of seven acclaimed African queens who were revered as rulers and warriors. It is also the third-annual Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Recital—a yearly performance honoring a dear friend of Washington Performing Arts and elevating new work of both established and renowned artists.

The soprano’s announcement comes as many artists refuse to perform at the Kennedy Center following Trump’s takeover. Issa Rae, Low Cut Connie, Adam Weiner, and the show “Finn” canceled performances. Additionally, many artists resigned from their positions, including Renee Fleming and Bem Folds.

President Donald Trump officially became the Chairman of the Board on Feb. 12 and installed Ric Grenell as the interim Executive Director. He also changed the entire board and filled it with loyalists like Pam Bondi and Dan Scavino.
