Julian Prégardien, Sarah Connolly & Emőke Baráth Lead CD/DVD Releases

By Francisco Salazar

Welcome back for this week’s look at the latest CD and DVD releases in the opera world.

As August ends, there will be a plethora of song albums as well as new music works that audiences can discover. Here is a look.

Die schöne Müllerin

Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin” will be released by Harmonia Mundi and will feature tenor Julian Prégardien and Kristian Bezuidenhout.

This release, a debut for Prégardien on the label, explores Schubert’s music through the duo’s unique reading and exploration of this time-honored music.

In a statement, Prégardien said, “I would love everyone’s first experience with Schubert to be one filled with empathy and affection. That would be incredible. If I ever have the opportunity to create projects in the future that facilitate this, where the initial encounter with Schubert is something intimate and personal, it would bring me immense joy. Because that’s precisely what Schubert’s songs are – a deeply intimate experience.”

Silenced – Unsung Voices of the 20th Century

Cedille Records releases “Silenced – Unsung Voices of the 20th Century” featuring tenor Ian Koziara and pianist Bradley Moore. The recording highlights works by Franz Schreker, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Viktor Ullmann, and Vítězslava Kaprálová.

Joy, Too

The Vertex Duo, composed of mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein and pianist Jeremy Chan release “Joy, Too,” a collection of melancholy songs that serves as a testament to the universal experience of sorrow, offering solace and understanding to those grappling with its impact.

Brahms Songbook, Vol. 2.

Sarah Connolly, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, and Malcolm Martineau perform five sets that were composed and published over 30 years. In the lieder recorded here, Brahms created a heightened emotional world, distant from the drawing rooms and concert halls of the bourgeoisie.

Fauré: Requiem & Gounod: Messe de Clovis

Alpha releases Fauré’s Requiem and Gounod’s “Messe de Clovis” with soloists Emőke Baráth and Philippe Estèphe. Le Concert Spirituel is conducted by Hervé Niquet.

Joy and Asymmetry: Einojuhani Rautavaara & Kalevi Aho

The Helsinki Chamber Choir is conducted by Nils Schweckendiek in music by Einojuhani Rautavaara and Kalevi Aho. The works featured on this disc offer a glimpse into the choral output of these two composers who, in addition to demonstrating their stylistic versatility, also reveal their literary curiosity.
