Grammy-winning singer Julia Bullock, the 2026-27 Aleko Endowed Artist at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, will perform a recital with five Shepherd School students on Oct. 9, 2026.

“Julia Bullock & Friends in Recital” combines art song, instrumental chamber music and readings of Langston Hughes’ poems, centered on Hughes and the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance.

Joining Bullock are sopranos Dejah Watts and Shikta Mukherjee, baritone Christopher Gray, violinist Fiona Shea and clarinetist Eliza Reimold. Lyndsi Maus, artist teacher of opera studies at the Shepherd School, is the pianist.

The recital falls early in Bullock’s residency at Rice, which runs Oct. 6 to 16 and gives students extended time to work with her directly.  Bullock has also held residencies with London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Cal Performances in Berkeley and the San Francisco Symphony. She curated the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Rock My Soul Festival alongside Ava DuVernay’s Array and served as director of Cincinnati’s May Festival this year. Her debut solo album “Walking in the Dark” won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, and she sang the world premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s “Song of the Reappeared,” a Chicago Symphony Orchestra commission.

Bullock said, per an official press release, “Whether working on poetry, prose or a libretto for an opera with Kurt Weill, his lyrical voice seemed to guide his writing.”

The showcase kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in the Morrison Theater at Brockman Hall for Opera.

The Aleko Endowed Artist Series brings leading artists and teachers to campus. Previous Aleko guests include Renée Fleming, James Conlon, Joyce DiDonato, Frederica von Stade and Isabel Leonard.
