The Metropolitan Opera is set to present John Adams’s most recent opera, “Antony and Cleopatra.”
The work will have its company premiere on May 12 and will mark the final new production of the 2024–25 season.
This will be the fifth opera by John Adams presented by the Met, a distinction last achieved by Richard Strauss.
The opera will star soprano Julia Bullock as Cleopatra and bass-baritone Gerald Finley as Antony. They will be joined by Paul Appleby, Elizabeth DeShong, Taylor Raven, Brenton Ryan, and Alfred Walker.
Director Elkhanah Pulitzer will transport the story from ancient Rome to the Golden Age of Hollywood, inspired by iconic cinematic interpretations of Cleopatra. John Adams conducts.
The opera will be presented between May 12 and June 7, and the May 12 and 24 and June 3 performances will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app. Audio from the May 24 performance will also be broadcast over the Robert K. Johnson Foundation–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.
