Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program Chorus to World Premiere ‘Brave’
By David SalazarThe Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program (MAP) Chorus will present the world premiere of “Brave” by Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York City.
The 105-voice chorus of students from Juilliard’s MAP, joined by an ensemble of MAP faculty, Juilliard alumni, and College Division students, will perform the Juilliard-commissioned work under the direction of MAP Chorus Director Adrian Rodriguez.
The piece, which explores the many forms of bravery and highlights how community is built through song, was conceived and composed by Lozano, MAP’s composer in residence for the 2025–26 academic year, with text by Newman.
Since 2021, MAP’s commissioning initiative has invited composers from underrepresented groups in classical music to work with the program’s ensembles. Lozano worked closely with Rodriguez and the MAP Chorus to develop the piece.
The concert will be live streamed on St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church’s YouTube channel.
