Juilliard Opera to Present ‘Falstaff’

By Francisco Salazar

Juilliard Opera is set to present Giuseppe Verdi’s “Falstaff” on April 22, 25, and 27 at Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

The production will be helmed by director and generative artist Marcus Shields in his Juilliard debut and conductor Joseph Colaneri returns to lead the Juilliard Orchestra.

The production will feature students from all degree programs of Juilliard’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. Among the students are Minki Hong, Titus Muzi, Page Michels, Shiyu Zhuo, Sophia Baete, Lauren Randolph, Adam Catangui, Chester SeungYup Han, Nathan Romportl, and Lin Fan.

In a statement Shields said, “Falstaff should feel fast, alive, and a little dangerous. It’s a piece in constant motion. I hope audiences leave energized and elated, with the recognition that all of us are a little ridiculous, and that’s part of the joy of being alive. I really think this opera is one of the best entry points into opera. It’s quick, funny, and incredibly human. It’s a piece that meets you immediately, and once you’re in, you start to feel how precise and sophisticated the music and storytelling really are.”

The April 25 performance will be live streamed at juilliard.edu/calendar via Juilliard LIVE, a free digital platform which allows audiences around the world to access Juilliard performances.
