Joyce DiDonato, Javier Camarena & Barbara Hannigan Highlight Palau de la Musica Catalana’s 2020-21 Season

The Palau de la Musica Catalana has announced its 2020-21 season featuring some of the greatest singers and choruses in the world.

For the purposes of this article, vocal performances are highlighted.

Marta Mathéu, Gemma Coma-Alabert, David Alegret, and Joan Martín-Royo are joined by pianists Jordi Armengol and Francisco Poyato for a program of Brahms.

Performance Date: Sept. 17, 2020

The Cor Lieder Càmera is conducted by Josep Vila and Casañas in a program of music by Bach, Brahms, Durufle, Gasull, Morera, Olle, and Vaughn-Williams.

Performance Date: Sept. 20, 2020

Handel’s Coronation anthems and Villa and Casanas’ El Mirador are set to be performed by Cors de la Federació Corals Joves de Catalunya, Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català, and Orquestra Simfònica Càmera Musicae under the direction of Manel Valdivieso.

Performance Date: Oct. 4, 2020

Simon Halsey conducts the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana and Vespres d’Arnadí i a program of music by Bach and Saariaho. Soloists to be determined.

Performance Date: Oct. 31, 2020

Josep Surinyac, the Cor Femení Voxalba, and conductor Elisenda Carrasco perform a program of music by Rodriguez, Montsalvatge, Witacre, Gavrilin, Achieng, Ogada, Gomis, and Part, among others.

Performance Date: Nov. 10, 2020

Ernest Villegas joins the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana and conductor Xavier Puig in a concert directed by Julio Manrique.

Performance Dates: Nov. 17-19, 2020

Anja Kampe sings in a program of music by Wagner alongside the Gran Teatre del Liceu Orchestra and Josep Pons.

Performance Date: Nov. 25, 2020

Yuri Temirkanov conducts the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic and the Orfeó Català  in Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. The program also includes music by Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

The Orfeó Català, Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana, Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català, Cor de Noies de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Infantil de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Mitjans de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Petits de l’Orfeó Català, and Cobla Sant Jordi-Ciutat de Barcelona perform under Simon Halsey in the traditional concert de Sant Esteve.

Performance Dates: Dec. 26, 2020

Joyce DiDonato presents her Songplay concert with Craig Terry, Chuck Israels, Charlie Porter, James Madison, and Lautaro Greco. The performance includes music by  Giordani, Caccini, Marcello, Paisiello, Ellington, Jones, Confrey, and Rodgers.

Jakub Józef Orlinski sings a program of music by Vivaldi and Handel with Il Giardino d’Amore and conductor Stefan Plewniak.

Javier Camarena and pianist Ángel Rodríguez team up for an evening of arias and songs.

Irene Mas, Lidia Vinyes-Curtis, and David Alegret join the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana and Orquestra Barroca Catalana for Bach’s Mass in B Minor. Xavier Puig conducts.

The Cor Petits de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Mitjans de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català, and the Cors de Palau Vincles  join forces with the Conjunt instrumental and conductor Esteve Nabona for Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Soloists to be determined.

Juan de la Rubia, Solistes del Balthasar Neumann Chor, and Balthasar Neumann Chor perform under Thomas Hengelbrock in a program featuring Brahms, Reger, Bruckner, Vivancos, and Liszt.

Regula Mühlemann and Michael Nagy join theBalthasar Neumann Chor & Orchester with Thomas Hengelbrock conducting the Brahms German Requiem.

Pianist Antonio Fernández performs alongside Gondwana Chorale and the Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català.

Singer Noa performs songs based on the music of Bach.

The Cor de Noies de l’Orfeó Català and organist Iveta Apkalna, under the direction of Buia Reixach and Feixes, perform a program of music by Poulenc, Faure, Vivancos, and Mendelssohn.

Barbara Hannigan leads the Munich Philharmonic in music by Nono, Haydn, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

Simon Halsey conducts Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion starring Julian Prégardien, Josep-Ramon Olivé, Marta Mathéu, Carlo Vistoli, Ilker Arkayürek, and Andreas Wolff.

Performance Dates: Feb. 27 & 28, 2021

James Newby and pianist Joseph Middleton perform a program of music by Brahms, Chausson, Clarke, Cole Porter, Ireland, Mahler, Mozart, Quilter, Rachmaninoff, and Schubert.

Performance Date: March 9, 2021

The Tallis Scholars and the Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català are led by Peter Phillips with music Palestrina, Allegri, Part, Byrd, and Tallis.

Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion is set to be performed by Julian Prégardien and Stéphane Degout with Ensemble Pygmalion. Raphaël Pichon conducts.

John Eliot Gardiner will present Bach’s “Passion according to Saint John” with the English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir.

Christopher Siebert leads the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalan in music by Bach, Schütz, and Mendelssohn.

Performance Date: April 18, 2021 

Marc Timón leads the Choir Little of the Orfeó Català, Choir Media of the Orfeó Català, Children’s Choir of the Orfeó Català, Choir of Girls of the Orfeó Català, and  the Young Choir of the Orfeó Català in the premiere of his own “Custom Cantata.”

Jordi Savall will lead a performance of Haydn’s “The Creation” with Yeree Suh, Tilman Lichdi, and Matthias Winckhler as the soloists.

Mezzo-soprano Natalie Pérez and Daniel Heide will perform music of  Bizet, Debussy, Delage, Fauré, Hahn, Mendelssohn, Rihm, Schubert, Schumann, and Wolff.

Josep Vila I Jover leads a performance of Guinovart’s “The Messiah” with Marta Mathéu and Carlos Daza as the soloists.

Simon Halsey will lead a performance of Mozart’s “Coronation Anthem” and Handel’s “Mass” with the Youth Choir of the Catalan Choral and the Girls Choir of the Catalan Choral Society performing.

Vivica Genaux joins forces with Danie Espasa and Vespres d’Arnadí in arias by Handel.

Soprano Fatma Said and pianist Malcolm Martineau take on music by Duparc, Mohie El Din, Poulenc, and Schumann.

 Mezzo-soprano Anna Alas I Jové joins forces with pianist Alexander Fleicher for music by Manén, Blancafort, Magrané, Montsalvatge, and Schumann.

Performance Date: June 7, 2021

Saariaho’s “Only Sound Remains” will be performed under the musical direction of Ernes Martinez Izquierdo. Soloists include Michal Slawecki and Bryan Murray, among others.
