Jorge Sosa & Cerise Jacobs’ Immigrant Opera ‘I Am A Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams’ To Make World Premiere

By Francisco Salazar

On Sept. 20, 2019, Cerise Jacobs and Jorge Sosa’s’ latest opera “I Am a Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams” will make its world premiere.

The new work  will make its world premiere at the Robert J. Orchard Stage of Boston’s Emerson Paramount Theater with a cast of various ethnicity. The cast is set to include Carla López-Speziale, Helen Zhibing Huang, Kirsten Chambers, Isis Contreras Perez, and Amy Li.

The opera tells the story a Mexican immigrant, Rosa, a “dreamer” jailed for her activism who is threatened with deportation, and the relationship she develops with her attorney, Singa, an ethnically Chinese immigrant from Indonesia.

Both librettist and composer Jacobs and Sosa bring their first-hand experience as immigrants from Singapore and Mexico respectively, and both the topic and an intentionally diverse, mostly-female cast and creative team reflect the ambition of Jacobs and her production company White Snake Projects.

The production is set to be conducted by Maria Sensi Sellner and will be directed by Elena Araoz.

The production runs through Sept. 22, 2019.
