Jorge De León To Replace Andrea Carè In Vienna

By Francisco Salazar

Jorge de León will jump into a production of “Madama Butterfly” at the Wiener Staatsoper on Dec. 3, 2018

The tenor will step in for Andrea Carè, who is ill.

De León recently concluded a production of “Manon Lescaut’ at the Staatsoper Hamburg and will perform the role of Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in January. He is also scheduled to perform Cavaradossi in ‘Tosca” at the Teatro Carlo Felice.

Over the years the Spanish tenor has garnered acclaim performing all over the world in such roles as Radamès in “Aida,” Cavaradossi in “Tosca,” and Macduff in Macbeth.” OperaWire saw in “Aida” at the Metropolitan Opera during the 2017-18 season noted that “Tenor Jorge de León’s instrument is a powerful one and it certainly rang through the Met with confidence and tremendous brightness. He showed no trepidation in the opening “Celeste Aida,” a passage that usually trips up even the best of tenors, his legato smooth and his vocal climaxes soaring through the auditorium.”

De León will perform alongside conductor Jader Bignami, soprano Ana María Martínez, who sings the title role of Cio-Cio-San, and Spanish baritone Gabriel Bermúdez as Sharpless.

Carè is set to perform “La Gioconda” in Brussels and Barcelona, as well as “La Bohème” in Sweden. He concludes his 2019 season with “Turandot” at the Teatro la Fenice.
