By Francisco SalazarWelcome back to this week’s look at the newest CD and DVD releases in the opera world.
Among the major options are three DVD releases, a world premiere, and a film album by the world’s most famous tenor. Here’s the rundown.
Oklahoma
Chandos Records releases a recording of Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s beloved musical, “Oklahoma” led by acclaimed conductor John Wilson.
The recording features the original orchestrations for a 29 piece orchestra made by Robert Russell Bennett for the original production, restored by the late Bruce Pomahac. The cast features Nathaniel Hackmann, Sierra Boggess, Jamie Parker, Louise Dearman, Sandra Marvin, Rodney Earl Clarke, Nadim Naaman, and Leo Roberts.
The album was recorded in Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos, and was released on double Hybrid SACD and in spatial audio.

Some Favored Nook
Composer Eric Nathan’s song cycle Some Favored Nook will be released as a new album on New Focus Recordings. Composed as a dramatic song cycle for soprano, baritone, and piano, the song cycle delves deeply into Dickinson’s correspondence with Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a passionate 19th-century abolitionist and women’s rights advocate known in his day as an essayist, minister and military officer in the American Civil War.
The Sound of Movies
Sony Classical releases Jonas Kaufmann’s latest album “The Sound of Movies” with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Jochen Rieder.
In a statement, Kaufmann said, “Immersing yourself in this world for a few hours and forgetting everything around you is incredibly fascinating – similar to the theater or opera. I’ve traveled a lot over many years, often alone for weeks and months in foreign cities at the other end of the world. In addition to museums, it was the cinema – that great opportunity to entertain yourself when you’re alone – that captured my imagination.”
The album includes music by Hans Zimmer, Leonard Bernstein, Vangelis, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Ennio Morricone, and Rachel Portman, among others.
Guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins Kaufmann on the album.
