Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Flórez, Sonya Yoncheva, Nina Stemme, & Piotr Beczala Lead Wiener Staatsoper’s 2022-23 Season

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced its 2022-23 season featuring six new productions, all of which are themed around Mahler.


Lorenzo Viotti conducts “Von Der Liebe Tod” which includes Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder” and “Das klagende Lied.” Calixto Bieito directs the production  which stars Vera-Lotte Boecker, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Daniel Jenz, and Florian Boesch. 

Performance Dates: Sept. 29, 2022-May 16, 2023

Philippe Jordan conducts Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg” in a production by Keith Warner. Michael Volle, David Butt Philip, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Wolfgang Koch, Georg Zeppenfeld, Michael Laurenz, Christina Bock, and Martin Häßler star. 

Performance Dates: Dec. 4-20, 2022

Gerhard A. Siegel, Michaela Schuster, Malin Byström, Iain Paterson, and Hiroshi Amako star in Strauss’ “Salome” with Philippe Jordan conducting the new production Cyril Teste.

Performance Dates: Feb. 2-12, 2023; April 21-29, 2023

Andrè Schuen, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Ying Fang, Peter Kellner, and Patricia Nolz star in a new production of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” directed by Barrie Kosky. Philippe Jordan conducts.

Performance Dates: March 11-26, 2023; June 6-17, 2023

Georg Nigl, Kate Lindsey, Josh Lovell, Hiroshi Amako, Andrea Mastroni, Jörg Schneider, and Helene Schneiderman star in Monteverdi’s “Il Ritorno di Ulisse.” Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the production by Jossie Wieler & Sergio Morabito. 

Performance Dates: April 2-14, 2023 

Sabine Devieilhe, Bernard Richter, Michaela Schuster, Nicole Car, Eve-Maud Hubeaux, Michael Kraus, and Maria Nazarova star in Poulenc’s “Dialogues de Carmelites.” Bertrand de Billy conducts the production by Magdalena Fuchsberger.

Bertrand de Billy conducts Halevy’s “La Juive” with Roberto Alagna, Sonya Yoncheva, Nina Minasyan, Günther Groissböck, and Cyrille Dubois. 

Performance Dates: Sept. 5-18, 2022

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” will star Günther Groissböck, Pavel Petrov, Clemens Unterreiner, Kathryn Lewek, Golda Schultz, and Peter Kellner. Bertrand de Billy conducts. Alexander Soddy conducts the second cast led by Franz-Josef Selig, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Clemens Unterreiner, Brenda Rae, Erin Morley, and Markus Werba.

Performance Dates: Sept. 7-Dec. 19, 2022

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be presented with two casts. The first cast will star Kyle Ketelsen, Ain Anger, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Pavol Breslik, Tara Erraught, Philippe Sly, Patricia Nolz, and Martin Häßler. The second cast will include Ketelsen, Anger, Eleonora Buratto, Dmitry Korchak, Kate Lindsey, Sly, Isabel Signoret, and Häßler. Philippe Jordan and Antonello Manacorda alternate at the pit.

Giacomo Sagripanti conducts Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with Levy Sekgapane, Paolo Bordogna, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Peter Kellner, and Marco Caria. A second cast includes Alasdair Kent, Paolo Bordogna, Patricia Nolz, Peter Kellner, and Boris Pinkhasovich. Michele Mariotti conducts the second cast.

Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Benjamin Bernheim, Simon Keenlyside, Erin Morley, Evgeny Solodovnikov, and Monika Bohinec.

Asmik Grigorian sings the title role of Janáček’s “Jenůfa” alongside a cast starring David Butt Philip, Michael Laurenz, and Violeta Urmana. Tomáš Hanus conducts.

Patricia Nolz, Georg Nigl, Slávka Zámečníková, Christina Bock, Andrea Mastroni, Wolfgang Bankl, and Hiroshi Amako star in Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” with Stefan Gottfried conducting.

Performance Dates: Oct. 14-22, 2022

Slávka Zámečníková, Bogdan Volkov, Davide Luciano, and Alex Esposito Healdine Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore.” A second cast will perform later in the year starring Kristina Mkhitaryan, Francesco Demuro, Clemens Unterreiner, and Ambrogio Maestri. Gianluca Capuano conducts.

Asmik Grigorian makes history starring in both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci.” She will be joubed by Jonathan Tetelman, Noa Beinart, Amartuvshin Enkhbat (who also sings both works), Isabel Signoret, Yonghoon Lee, Jörg Schneider, and Stefan Astakhov.
