Jonas Kaufmann Clarifies Why He is Singing the Prologue to ‘Pagliacci’
By Francisco SalazarJonas Kaufmann is opening up about why he is singing the prologue to “Pagliacci,” usually sung by a baritone.
The tenor took to social media, “I have no plans for now to start singing baritone roles for now. This prologue is for a baritenor.” He added that Canio’s tessitura is lower and it is not a big stretch. He also noted that his colleague Adam Plachetka is singing both Alfio and Tonio and it gives him a break throughout opera.
Kaufmann is starring in “Pagliacci” alongside Adam Plachetka, Jörg Schneider, and Stefan Astakhov. The opera is being performed alongside “Cavalleria Rusticana” with Elīna Garanča, Jonathan Tetelman, Elena Zaremba, Adam Plachetka, and Anita Monserrat. Nicola Luisotti conducts the production by Jean-Pierre Ponelle.
The production will be broadcast on Feb. 9 on ORF III.
