Johanni van Oostrum Leads Dutch National Opera’s ‘Rusalka’

By Francisco Salazar

The Dutch National Opera is set to present a new production of Dvořák’s “Rusalka.”

The production will be directed by Philipp Stölzl, who is having a career in film as well as opera. He will present a new reading of this dark fairy tale about the ill-fated water nymph. His Rusalka will center on a woman who is hoping to make her mark in Hollywood, the land of make-believe.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will be led Joana Mallwitz, who will be making her debut at Dutch National Opera. She will lead a cast that includes South African soprano Johanni van Oostrum, Czech tenor Pavel Černoch, and German soprano Annette Dasch. They will be joined by American mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, who will be making her debut in Amsterdam in the role of Ježibaba as well as Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev as Vodník.

“Rusalka” will be performed eight times between June 2 to 25, 2023.
