Jamie Barton Calls Out The Times U.K. For Headline
By Francisco SalazarJamie Barton is calling out the Times for publishing a headline that did not reflect her interview.
The Times published the mezzo’s interview with a headline quoting her stating, “Opera Singers are being forced to take Ozempic.” However, the digital version was changed to “There is real pressure for opera singers to take Ozempic.”
The mezzo noted that the quote from the original headline was not hers and that she did not believe those words. She said, “It’s not the way I speak, and it’s not the message I want out in the world, especially not during Pride.”
She added that she thought she would be spotlighting queer people in opera living the United States at this time.
In the Times article, Barton speaks on the LGBT issues in the United States as well as her political views and said, “I’m reminded of how Pride started as a riot, as a fight for rights, for liberty, for freedom. We are who we are. We are not going to silence ourselves.”
She added that she was not a fan of the current U.S. administration but noted that if she were invited to the Kennedy Center, she would perform. “I would hands down gladly go there because that’s my place. That’s ours. I would show up as exactly who I am and do my job to the best of my ability. In and of itself, that would be an act of rebellion.”
The article does discuss her struggles with weight loss and accepting middle age.
