iSing Silicon Valley Continues 10th Anniversary Season with Workshops by Joyce DiDonato, Concerts, Coaching, and an Album Pre-Release Party

By Chris Ruel

This winter, iSing Silicon Valley continues its 10th-anniversary season by partnering with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato for workshops and an Eden project concert presented by Stanford Live at Bing Concert Hall on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. Eighty-seven elementary school students from iSing Harmonics Chorus and iSing@RWC, a neighborhood chorus for Redwood City Title 1 females, will perform “Seeds of Hope” with DiDonato after a workshop with teaching artist Manolo Davila, exploring local environmental challenges through the arts.

iSing then opens the St. Olaf Choir’s 2023 West Coast Winter Tour at Grace’s Cathedral on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. and participates in a master class with Dr. Anton Armstrong.

The choir presents a pre-release party at the Triton Museum of Art on February 11, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. The party celebrates the release of iSing’s second full-length album, “love & light,” scheduled for release by AVIE Records in April 2023. The program includes Kile Smith’s “Monstra te esse Matrem” and Andrew Smith’s “Ave Regina Caelorum” from the album. Harpist Cheryl Fulton and composer Kenyon Duncan are featured guest artists. Attendees will enjoy food and drink and watch a movie about the creation of the album. That same month, iSing’s elite chorus, HD, receives one-on-one coaching and will learn about high-level collegiate choirs from St. Olaf, Choir conductor Dr. Anton Armstrong.

In late February, iSing heads to Cincinnati, OH, to play pieces from “love & light” at the national ACDA conference Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. & 4:30 p.m. at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. The program includes the world premiere of Latvian composer Santa Ratniece’s “Where the Insects Cry” and Kenyon Duncan’s “chorea lucis.” Both works were iSing commissions.

“We are thrilled to offer so many inspiring musical opportunities to our singers this spring,” said iSing Artistic Director Jennah Delp Somers in a press statement. “From our ongoing commissioning initiative – which to date has produced nearly 30 new pieces for treble voices – to releasing our second album, to participating in workshops and master classes while performing alongside some of the most accomplished musicians today, our tenth anniversary season has given our singers room to learn and grow while facing musical challenges with great enjoyment and poise.”
