The Music Academy of the West has announced its 72nd Summer Season, which will include a wide range of musical performances. For the purposes of this article, we will only focus on vocal and operatic performances.

Everything kicks off with the Voice Program Opening Night, which will feature the 2019 Vocal Institute Fellows. In their ranks are four sopranos, four mezzo-sopranos, six tenors, one countertenor, four baritones, and two basses.

Performance Date: June 19, 2019

Isabel Leonard will be a featured Mosher Guest, presenting a recital alongside pianist John Churchwell.

Performance Date: July 11, 2019

The company will also feature a “Shakespeare Salon,” with music based on the plays of the famed playwright. There will be music by Bernstein, Nicolai, Bellini, Thomas, Britten, Gounod, and Verdi, performed by 2019 Vocal Institute Fellows.

Performance Dates: June 29-July 1, 2019

The biggest vocal event of the festival will likely be the performances of Jennifer Higdon’s “Cold Mountain.” Daniela Candillari will conduct a cast that includes Evan Bravos, Anneliese Klenetsky, Talin Nalbandian, Sangmoon Lee, and Andrew Zimmermann, among many others. James Darrah directs the performances.

Performance Dates: August 2-4, 2019

The Marilyn Horne Song Competition is set to take place. Horne will be joined on the jury by Ken Noda and Jennifer Higdon; the winners will perform a song cycle written by Higdon.

Performance Date: August 9, 2019

There will also be a series of masterclasses featuring Margo Garrett Isabel Leonard, Jay Hunter Morris, James Darrah, John Churchwell, Michael Tilson Thomas, Martin Katz, and Marilyn Horn.
