Isabel Leonard, Christine Goerke & Arturo Chacón-Cruz Highlight Houston Grand Opera’s 2020-2021 Season
By Dejan VukosavljevicThe Houston Grand Opera has announced its 2020-21 season featuring a number of established as well as rising stars. Here is a detailed look at the upcoming productions:
The season opens with Bizet’s “Carmen” with a cast that includes Isabel Leonard and Carolyn Sproule alternating in the role of Carmen, Andrea Caré and Frederick Ballentine alternating as Don José, Anita Hartig in her signature Micaela and Christian Pursell as Escamillo. Eun Sun Kim will conduct a production by Rob Ashford.
Performance Dates: October 23, 25, 31, November 4, 6, 8 & 13, 2020
Massenet’s “Werther” will return to the HGO stage with Ana María Martínez, Arturo Chacón-Cruz in the title role and Joshua Hopkins. Patrick Summers will conduct a production by Francisco Negrin.
Performance Dates: October 30, November 1, 7, 10 & 15, 2020
In December, Joel Thompson’s opera “The Snowy Day” will make its world premiere. The opera, with a libretto by Andrea Davis Pinkney, will star Julia Bullock and Zoie Reams. Patrick Summers will conduct the production by Omer Ben Seadia.
Performance Dates: December 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19 & 20, 2020
Christine Goerke and Russell Thomas will star in Wagner’s “Parsifal” with Patrick Summers conducting. The production by John Caird will also star Ryan McKinny, Kwangchul Youn, Andrea Silvestrelli and André Courville.
Performance Dates: January 22, 27, 30, February 4 & 7, 2021
Emily D’Angelo, Jack Swanson, Sean Michael Plumb, Patrick Carfizzi and André Courville star in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola.” Corrado Rovaris is set to conduct the production by Joan Font.
Performance Dates: January 29, 31, February 6, 9 & 12, 2021
The HGO will perform the company premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s acclaimed work “Breaking the Waves.” The work will star HGO Studio alumna Lauren Snouffer as the conflicted heroine Bess Mc Neill and Alexander Elliot as her husband Jan. Michelle Bradley, Zoie Reams and Nicholas Phan round out the cast. Nicole Paiement will conduct the production by Tom Morris.
Performance Dates: April 16, 18, 24, 29 & May 1, 2021
The season concludes with “The Sound of the Music” by Richard Rodgers. Jeanine De Bique, Michael Mayes, Katie Van Kooten, Daniel Belcher and Megan Marino star. Richard Bado will conduct Francesca Zambello’s production.
Performance Dates: April 30, May 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 14 & 15, 2021
