Mezzo-soprano Lucija Varsic has won the London Handel Festival’s International Handel Singing Competition.
Varsic also won the audience prize, while the second prize went to soprano Maryam Wocial.
The competition saw six finalists who performed an all-Handel programme accompanied by the Academy of Ancient Music. The finalists also included mezzo-soprano Mathilda Sidén Silfver, baritone Peter Edge, soprano Rumyana Kostova, and countertenor Steffen Bjerre Jespersen.
This year’s judges included Crispin Woodhead, Deborah Warner CBE, Iestyn Davies MBE FRAM, Sue Spence, and Jonathan Lemalu ONZM.
In a statement, the judges said, “With six outstanding finalists, choosing a winner was no easy task. Each singer brought something unique and deeply compelling to the stage. The International Handel Singing Competition is just one night in these artists’ journeys, and we have no doubt that every one of them will go on to have remarkable careers.”
