Ildar Abdrazakov Out of Opernhaus Zürich & Wiener Staatsoper

By Francisco Salazar

Ildar Abdrazakov is out of the Opernhaus Zürich and the Wiener Staatsoper.

The bass who was originally announced to perform in Zürich in a revival of “L’Italiana in Algeri” starting Dec. 31, 2023 has been replaced by Pietro Spagnoli. Meanwhile, according to Opernnews, the Wiener Staatsoper has announced that it has “mutually agreed with Mr. Abdrazakov” that “there will be no performances by him until further notice.” He was set to perform a revival of “Nabucco” in June.

The news comes only days after the bass endorsed Vladimir Putin’s reelection campaign and his Paris Opera performances were canceled.

Since the start of the war in February 2022, the Zürich Opera and Wiener Staatsoper have condemned the actions of Vladimir Putin.

While the Wiener Staatsoper was adamant about not firing Russian artists, intendant Bogdan Roscic noted that state theaters are not contracting artists who are in favor of the war. The Zurich Opera has also not hired Pro-Putin artists.

This past week Abdrazakov performed at the Ravenna Festival and he is still set to perform with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. The rest of his schedule is in Russia at the Mariinsky Theatre and other Russian concert halls.
