Ildar Abdrazakov Out of Carnegie Hall & Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerts

Ildar Abdrazakov has canceled his upcoming performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

In a press statement, the organization said that “bass-baritone Matthias Goerne will replace Ildar Abdrazakov in the performances and recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 on May 4, 5, 6, 2023. Mr. Abdrazakov is withdrawing from these concerts for family reasons.”

The news comes as the bass also withdrew from performances at the Teatro alla Scala for the same reasons.

Abdrazakov has also bowed out of a performance of “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” scheduled for Jan. 30, 2024, at Carnegie Hall with the BSO. For this performance, no excuse was given. Abdrazakov has been under fire for his closeness to the Kremlin during the war. He was caught on video celebrating New Year’s with the Defense Minister of Russia and has allegedly been paid for several concerts considered propaganda.

The bass recently revealed that he was pausing his relationship with the Metropolitan Opera due to Peter Gelb’s treatment of Anna Netrebko and Hibla Gerzmava.

Abdrazakov still has concerts lined up with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in May and the Monte-Carlo Opera in April. He will also perform at the Bayerische Staatsoper which famously severed its ties with Anna Netrebko and Valery Gergiev.
