Ildar Abdrazakov Cancels ‘Boris Godunov’ at Wiener Staatsoper

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of “Boris Godunov.”

The company noted that Alexander Tsymbalyuk will take over the title role replacing Ildar Abdrazakov.

Abdrazakov recently canceled a production of “Tosca” at the Teatro Naples noting, “Unfortunately, my mother is unwell and I need to spend time with her and get her the care she needs.” The bass has however been performing steadily in Russia, where he sang various roles at the Mariinsky Theatre under Putin supporter Valery Gergiev and recently completed a season of the Russian version of “The Masked Singer.”

Tsymbalyuk joins a cast that includes Margaret Plummer, Ileana Tonca, Thomas Ebenstein, Vitalij Kowaljow, and Dmitry Golovnin. Sebastian Weigle conducts performances that are scheduled to take place between May 15 and 27, 2022.

Abdrazakov returns to the stage on June 15 when he holds a concert in Moscow.
