This weekend, Idartes moved forward with a performance of the zarzuela “Maria La O” for the deaf and hearing.
The work was presented at the Teatro Jorge Eliecer Gaitán on March 1, 2025, and also represented the first time the work was presented in Colombia.
The Zarzuela starred deaf artists as well as hearing artists to create a multisensorial experience featuring projections as well as sign language and live music. The production aims to rediscover Zarzuela in a way that engages new audiences and finds new ways of presenting the art form to be more inclusive.
According to El Espectador, the idea came from soprano Ana María Martín who suffers from hearing loss and who has used her experience to revolutionize zarzuela to better integrate the deaf community into classical music.
The cast included Gloria Casa, Camilo Mendoza, Andrés Restrepo, and Luna Melo Díaz.
