Iconic WQXR radio host Robert Sherman has announced his retirement after an illustrious 68-year career. As the host of the “Young Artists Showcase” since its inception in 1978, Sherman gave countless emerging musicians their radio debut. The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Family Foundation will continue to support the program with guest hosts during the search for a successor.
In a press statement, Harold McGraw III, the former Chairman, President and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies, said, “Our family is extremely proud of its relationship with Bob Sherman and the ‘Young Artists Showcase’ on WQXR. For 45 years, thanks in large measure to Bob’s extraordinary dedication, we have introduced thousands of gifted young musicians to a wider audience through the ‘Young Artist Showcase’ platform. We salute Bob for his thoughtfulness and passion and wish him continued success and happiness.”
Beyond the airwaves, Sherman wrote for The New York Times as a music critic and columnist and authored several books, including “The Smart Guide to Classical Music,” along with two books with comedian and pianist Victor Borge, “My Favorite Intermissions,” and “My Favorite Comedies in Music.” He also hosted television programs on PBS and CBS, including “Vibrations” and “Camera Three.” For over 20 years, he served on the graduate faculty of The Juilliard School.
“The end of Bob’s presence on WQXR is truly the end of an era,” said Ed Yim, Chief Content Officer, WQXR, in an official statement. “He has been part of New Yorkers’ lives for generations and words cannot express how grateful we are for the wit, wisdom and grace he has shared with us as a colleague and as a pillar of our musical community.”
On June 14 at 9:00 p.m. EDT and again on June 17 at 11:00 p.m., WQXR will air “Young Artists Showcase: Bob’s Finale.” Sherman will reflect on his 45 years as host of the “Young Artists Showcase,” highlighting unforgettable moments and extraordinary performances from talents such as pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Chee-Yun, the Shaham siblings, Gil and Orli, as well as the Gaudete Brass Quintet and others.
Additionally, over the next few weeks, WQXR will pay tribute to Sherman’s contributions with special on-air programs and online features. The events include a photomontage by Sherman’s son and performance photographer, Steve J. Sherman, and a special tribute from WNYC “New Sounds” Host John Schaefer.
