Hungarian State Opera Under Fire For White ‘Porgy And Bess’

By Francisco Salazar

The Hungarian State Opera is under fire for its recent revival of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”

After performing a controversial production last season with an all-white cast, the house revived the production, again with an all-white cast, intentionally going against the Gershwin estates stipulations which indicate that the work should be performed by an all-black cast.

However, according to Hungarian news, this season, the cast received letters requesting to declare themselves African-American.

The letters, which were written by the Hungarian State Opera noted that the singers should declare themselves of “African-American origins and spirit which forms an inseparable part” of their identity.

According to the company’s general director adhering to Gershwin’s rules would limit the Hungarian State Opera from performing the work because Hungary does not keep record of skin color.
