Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo has opened its production of Sorozábal’s “La Tabernera del Puerto.”
The production, which opened on July 30 and is set to run through August 2 arrives in a production from the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
The production features stage direction by Mario Gas and musical direction by Miquel Ortega, with the Orquesta Filarmónica Juvenil and Coro Filarmónico Juvenil of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá.
The cast includes soprano Leonor Bonilla, tenor Antonio Gandía, and baritones César San Martín and Rubén Amoretti from Spain, alongside Colombian artists baritone Erwin Barrera, bass Alexis Trejos, and soprano Paula Pataquiva. Spanish actors Vicky Peña and Pep Molina also appear in the production.
Premiered in 1936 with a libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández Shaw, “La Tabernera del Puerto” is regarded by Spanish critics as the last great zarzuela in the genre’s history.
