By David Salazar

The Hungarian State Opera will present Péter Eötvös’ “Valuska” at the Eiffel Art Studios on Dec. 2, 2023.

The world premiere opera was commissioned by the company in 2018 and represents the 13th opera composed by Eötvös. It is based on the novel “The Melancholy of Resistance” and centers on a traveling circus that arrives at a small town. Murder ensues dragging the innocent János Valuska into its orbit.

The opera will star Zsolt Haja in the title role alongside Adrienn Miksch (Mrs Pflaum), Tünde Szabóki (Tünde), and András Hábetler (Professor). Kálmán Szennai conducts the production which will be directed by Bence Varga.

This is the first Eötvös opera that the Hungarian State Opera world premieres and the fourth by the composer that it features following “Three Sisters,” “Love and Other Demons,” and “Senza Sangue.”

The next stop for “Valuska” will be the Regensburg Theatre in February 2024.
