Heartbeat Opera to Revive ‘Vanessa’

By David Salazar

Heartbeat Opera is set to revive its adaptation of Samuel Barber’s “Vanessa” this Spring.

The production will come to New York City for the first time, following a celebrated debut at the Williamstown Theatre Festival last summer.

The production, which runs from May 12–31, 2026 at Baruch Performing Arts Center, will be directed by R.B. Schlather with a new arrangement by Dan Schlosberg for seven instrumentalists. Three cast members return from the Williamstown production: Inna Dukach in the title role, Joshua Jeremiah as the Doctor, and Mary Phillips as the Baroness. Joining them are Kelsey Lauritano as Erika, a current ensemble member at Oper Frankfurt, and Grammy Award-winning tenor Frederick Ballentine as Anatol.

“These characters feel suspended in some kind of emotional isolation, replaying cycles over and over. It’s not about the past, it’s about patterns. It exists out of time. That’s what elevates it for me to something mythic, tragic, monumental,” R.B. Schlather said, per an official press release.
