The Handel and Haydn Society has announced the recipients of their Youth Choruses Scholarship Award, in recognition of achievement and commitment to the vocal arts.

The Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence went to Helen Peppler. Currently a student of the Carnegie Mellon School of Music, Peppler will receive a scholarship for $3,000.

The Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award went to Sam Higgins. Currently, a high school senior set to enter the Curtis Institute of Music this fall, Higgins has been with the YCP for at least two years and will receive a scholarship of $2,000.

The Evangelyna Etienne Scholarship Award went to Somin Virmani. A junior at Phillips Academy Andover. Virmani will receive a scholarship for $1,000 in recognition of his achievements in connecting the community through music.

The H+H Education Committee also recognized a group of students for their artistry and contributions to the community: Alex Franklin, KeeSeok Lee, Rachel Warhaftig, and Evan Strouse. Each of them will receive the HHYC Achievement Award, which comes with scholarship prizes ranging from $500 to $750.

“These students have been through a lot this past year. As the Youth Choruses program went through tremendous changes, moving to remote learning due to the pandemic, the thing that remained the same was the student’s passion and dedication to the music we love,” said David Snead, President and CEO of Handel and Haydn Society. “We are truly proud to honor these remarkable students and help them continue the skills they learned with H+H as they work toward a career in the performing arts.”
