Groupmuse Presents 10,000th Concert

By Afton Markay

Groupmuse, a worker- and musician-owned cooperative has reached a major milestone by hosting its 10,000th concert.

The majority of Groupmuse’s events take place in non-traditional concert spaces, like living rooms, cafes, distilleries,
and backyards. The 10,000th concert was titled, “”Warm your winter with A House Concert.” The concert took place in Portland, Oregon and featured star classical guitarist David Elan Kelley.

The cooperative’s origins can be traced back to Boston in the early 2010s. Musicians from the New England Conservatory would gather for chamber music parties, filling homes music late into the night. Within a year, Groupmuse received national recognition and was organizing 75 concerts per month in Boston, New York City, and San Francisco. Forbes called it “Airbnb for Classical Music.”

Groupmuse has hosted numerous opera concerts with singers such as soprano Valeria Chibis, mezzo-soprano Erin Wagner, tenor Jasmina Čnčič, bass Randall Scarlata, and many more. Upcoming opera performances include baritone Kofi Hayford at Caffe Taci on July 25, and a performance by mezzo-soprano Marie Anello, baritone Mark Watson, and pianist Mara Waldman on July 26.
