The Greek National Opera has canceled its performances slated for March 7 and 8 as precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus.

The performances in question include the world premiere of “The Papess Joanne” at the Stavros Niarchos Hall on March 8 as well as “Europeras 1 & 2” on March 7; that performance was to take place at the Alternative Stage.

Per a statement, the situation will be re-evaluated on March 9, 2020 and those who had tickets for “The Papess Joanne” will be offered a refund or the possibility of exchanging their tickets for a future date.

There are still other performances for “The Papess Joanne,” an opera by Yiorgos Vassilandonakis scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2020. The work was commissioned to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Greek National Opera.

The March 7 showcase of “Europeras 1 & 2” by John Cage was the final of a three-show run. These series of shows comprised the Greek premiere of the work.
