Greece Shuts Down Theaters & Cinemas Due to Surge in COVID-19 Cases

By Francisco Salazar

Greece has announced new lockdown restrictions due to the rise of COVID-19.

Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that starting Tuesday, Nov. 3, all dining areas will be suspended, except for home deliveries as well as bars, cafes, cinemas, museums, theaters, and indoor gyms. As a result, the Greek National Opera and other concert halls will close for the month, effectively canceling all performances originally planned.

According to the Prime Minister, the new measures were made to “move precautionarily with a dynamic plan in November” in order to avoid a universal lockdown, which would hurt the economy and society.

The Prime Minister also announced the mandatory use of masks everywhere, indoors and outdoors, daily curfews from midnight to 5:00 in the morning, complete distance learning in universities, and no gatherings. The new restrictions will last the entire month of November.

Greece has seen a surge of COVID-19 cases reporting 1,676 new cases on Oct. 30, an all-time high for the country.
