Great Lakes Operetta Presents ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’
By David SalazarGreat Lakes Operetta (GLO) is presenting Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld,” the company’s first full length, fully staged production.
The production, which opened on July 10 at the Bramble Arts Loft in Chicago runs through July 19, 2026.
The Chicago based company, founded in 2024, specializes in reimagining operetta for contemporary audiences. This production uses a new English translation and chamber orchestral reduction by Francis L. Lynch, based on the original 1858 two act version with additional material from the 1874 four act version. The staging features Mason Montuoro as Orpheus, with Gabrielle Goudard and Gabrielle Haigh alternating as Eurydice, and Alexander Quackenbush as Jupiter. SarahAnn Sutter serves as director and choreographer. Lindsey Baer conducts four instrumentalists.
“Our tagline at Great Lakes Operetta is ‘Where Opera Meets Musical Theater,’ and ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’ is the perfect show to demonstrate this,” Sutter said, per an official press release. “While the performers sing in an operatic style, the dialogue, dance breaks, and overall sense of fun really show how operetta was the precursor of modern musical theater.”
