Gran Teatre del Liceu to Present ‘Otello’ Despite COVID-19 Cases
By Francisco SalazarThe Gran Teatre del Liceu is set to present Verdi’s “Otello” despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, the Spanish company said that “despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Liceu reinforces its commitment to offer a quality program that assures absolute safety. The Teatre succeeds in staging a production featuring an artistic team that is both unique and exceptional within the current international scene.”
The Barcelona company announced that Gustavo Dudamel will make his operatic debut in Spain with a cast that includes Gregory Kunde and Jorge de León in the role of Otello, Krassimira Stoyanova, and Eleonora Buratto as Desdemona, and Carlos Álvarez and Željko Lučić as the evil Jago.
The new production will be brought from Bayerische Staatsoper and will be directed by Amélie Niermeyer. During the 2018 premiere, OperaWire noted it was a “bold production.”
“Otello” opens on March 27 and runs through April 14.
