Gran Teatre del Liceu Cancels Opening of Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’

UPDATED: The Entire Run of the Production has been canceled. 

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced that the opening of Wagner’s “Lohengrin” has been canceled.

The theater revealed that due to the restrictions placed by the government of Catalunya to only hold events of 1,000 people or less, the Liceu decided to cancel the opening performance on March 19 and subsequent shows on March 22 and 25.

The production by Katharina Wagner will however, open on March 28 and run through April 5 if restrictive measures are lifted.

This is the first Spanish theater to close due to the coronavirus outbreak. In Spain, 1,622 cases have been reported with 35 deaths confirmed. Spain currently has the world’s fifth-highest total of cases and all universities and schools are closed in Madrid and Madrid’s public transport will be disinfected every day.

“Lohengrin” is set to star Günther Groissböck, Klaus Florian Vogt, Emily Magee, Olafur Sigurdarson, and Evelyn Herlitzius.
