By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a cast change for its production of “Carmen.”

The company said mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham will assume the title role in the opera “Carmen” by Bizet in all previously announced performances with Varduhi Abrahamyan, who is forced to withdraw due to indisposition.

Shaham already performed the production on Jan. 3 and 7, 2024. She is a well-known singer who has performed in Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Moscow, New York, Vancouver, and Lisbon, among others. She is known for her interpretation of “Carmen” as well as Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni,” Preziosilla in “La Forza del Destino,” and Cherubino in “Le Nozze di Figaro.”

Shaham is set to join a cast that includes Leonardo Capalbo, Eric Greene, and Jeanine De Bique. Josep Pons conducts the production by Calixto Bieito.
